About the Author / Site

I have been trying to learn guitar off and on throughout my life, having purchased and sold quite a few guitars but never really having caught on. It's only been this past while that I've began to learn theory and learn to properly practice. After over 20 years of trying to achieve my dream of being somewhat proficient in playing guitar, things seem to slowly be coming together now.

Why the project 'Riff Genie'?

A good friend of mine always had the same dream - to play proficiently - and like myself, he tried off and on throughout the years without much success. When I began to recently play again, so did he. In sending one another video clips of playing, I discovered something about myself. Sometimes I'd do 40-50 takes of a clip before I felt it was decent enough to send. Each take required that I put in extra effort - that I tried my best. Often when I'd be sitting home noodling aimlessly, I didn't actually put in nearly the same effort. I didn't put in the effort to be perfect because if no one was around, I could make all the mistakes in the world and I thought it wouldn't matter. So, I easily concluded that trying to record myself doing decent versions of what I was trying to accomplish, helped me more than anything else I had tried - it was meaningful practice.

As someone who has a love for classic video games as well as playing guitar, I thought why not record covers of my favorite game tunes? The practice obviously would benefit me tremendously. Fans of the games I cover would hopefully appreciate my music. Learning to write a website, do basic graphics, edit video, to learn how to record and edit audio tracks and midi were all great rainy day tasks to accomplish.
